Samuel is classified as a "digital shape shifter", holding many forms that link not only to their assignment(s) but to other robotic or cybernetic entities around them if certain contact and bonds are made. They change their forms based on the state of their assignment, or on the person they are linked with. For example: STARTUP is linked to SAI, representing the form they had when the two first met and became close, a form in that was created through an accidental spark from SAI's tail. DEFENDER is linked to CIA, who shocked SAM by accident with his tail during a sparring match. Finally, EX is linked to Sam's ex-boyfriend by means of extreme feelings that they felt at the time. Most of their forms, however, are linked with Malory and Matthias, linking to their physical states as computer droids. This causes an air of worry, as this shifting ability is completely uncontrollable for them and generally causes a fair bit of pain for them if they happen to shift into a fusion or border form.
